MASTERSTROKES: Joanna McKethan’s paintings hang in private homes in the U.S. and in Europe, on university campuses and in the headquarters of businesses such as SAS Institute and Wake Med in Cary, and the Insurance Building in Raleigh, NC. Her portraits hang in private homes in the U.S. and in Germany. Among her portrait subjects are: Rick and Deborah Makins family portrait, Lands End, NC & Washington, D.C. Whether in oil or in watercolor, her work is grounded in the best tradition, and her art training at Queens University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been augmented by Old Masters training in Munich, West Germany in oils by a German master, Bergheim; stateside under Thomas Buechner of Corning, NY, and by watercolor training at the University of Munich Extension by a Polish master, Leon Jonczyk. Her art career spans three decades. She has won numerous prizes and is signature member of two watercolor societies: the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, Southern Watercolor Society; she is a former board member of WSNC, and is a member of the Portrait Society of America. In her watercolor Heirloom series, she creates a composition resembling a collage using the favorite things of the portrait subject. This includes one or two painted snapshots of the person, plus the items themselves: reference paintings “University Years” and “Dear Heart.” Joanna’s portraits are life-like, dimensional and capture the elegance of the subject.
